Be Headstrong and You Cannot Go Wrong

If you are not a headstrong person, you need to give yourself the best chance of becoming so. Headstrong people are inevitably and the most likely to be successful throughout life. Each day is a challenge to them and they often set themselves little goals throughout the day that they will meet without fail. If they are able to do this then the goals that they meet give their day a successful rating.

But is it really that difficult to be headstrong. You just have to make up decisions in your mind and go through with them. Headstrong people don’t always get things right, but at least they remain true to what they believe and are honest with themselves. This also applies to love and dating. The headstrong people in life will end up with someone they desire heavily for many reasons.

These reasons are different all the time. It is firstly because they are an attractive proposition for the opposite sex. Someone who appears to be in control of their life is attractive. They know where they are going and are not seeking a new direction. So it is important that in love you try to be as strong mentally as possible. If they haven’t text you back for a few hours then don’t freak out. Just get on with your day and forget about it.

If the person that you are seeking is worth it, they will get in contact. And if they do not then it does not necessarily mean that they are not worth it. Just be decisive in what you do and life will mysteriously fall into place. I say mysteriously because you will not realise why it has fallen into place at first. It will only be on reflection that you realise it has been successful because you have set yourself goals and met them.

Make yourself a goals orientated person and your life will become more straightforward. Punish yourself if you do not meet these goals and if you do meet them you will be rewarded with success. Too Good To Be True, Run Away!

Many people have come to me with the same problem; ‘Everything seems so perfect with this new person I met, I can’t find anything wrong, so I better leave before I get hurt.’

It’s very common to not be able to figure out what that strange thing is which is preventing you from having that deep connection.

‘It’s just too good to be true.’

That feeling triggers subconscious fears of getting hurt and prevents you from making that deep emotional connection. You then just accept that there is a problem you cannot see and run away.

But the only problem is that you cannot believe you found someone so perfectly aligned to your desires.

The qualities you’re looking for in a partner are often set at a very high standard. When you actually find someone with those qualities you tend to close your heart or run away because you cannot believe it’s true.

“How could I find someone with all the qualities I’m looking?” “I must be missing something.”

The fear kicks in that if you find that special person, you would be so deeply in love, if they left, you would be totally devastated. So your subconscious fears tell you it is better to pick someone with flaws you can see, so you never let your heart become fully invested in the relationship.

But of course, that leads to repeated relationships that end in failure, obviously since you pick someone you are not really matched well with.

We have to learn to trust more and take a chance with a strong heart that is willing to risk being disappointed.

  3. There is only one thing that makes life perfect, and that is a loving relationship. If you don’t take the chance, you will guarantee a lonely life. So try and know that if it works, great, but if not, you will recover and try again.

The Worst Advice Speakers Get… And What They Should Be Told

Speakers get nervous. It’s only natural. For most people, it is an opportunity on an important stage to make a good impression – or not! Sympathetic supporters try to help with what they think is good advice. Sometimes it is; but often it’s not. In fact, some of the worst advice I’ve ever heard has been given to speakers by friends, family and colleagues.

“Don’t be nervous… you’ll be great.”

When has telling people not to be nervous made them less nervous? It’s like telling someone not to feel hot. You cannot just switch these sensations on and off. And telling someone suffering stage fright that they will be great is unhelpful or simply unheard.

It’s terrible advice because most people are already telling themselves, “I should not be so nervous.” It simply reinforces their feeling of wrongness. Not only are they feeling nervous; they’re feeling guilty for feeling that way! What a sure-fire way to erode self-confidence.

Instead, they should be told that nervousness is normal. Some of the world’s most famous performers still get debilitating performance anxiety. Once they accept the fact that this is just the body’s natural reaction to a high-stress scenario, they can look at ways to mitigate the effects. This might be slow deep breathing, stepping out their presentation (metaphorically and/or literally), listening to their favourite music – it’s very individual.

“Calm down.”

Same as “Don’t be nervous”. Wasted words.

Instead, recognise the adrenalin rush and help turn it from a negative energy to a positive excitement by reassuring them how much the audience is looking forward to their presentation.

“Keep changing your presentation so it will always be interesting for you.”

Compare your speech to a tour. You are the tour guide, the venues you visit constitute your content and your audience is the tour group. Imagine you are a tourist in that group and the guide says, “Welcome to X. This is the first time I’ve been here. The other places get pretty boring after a while.”

Your interest and satisfaction must be based on your ability to interest the audience, not to interest yourself. And to give your audience the most interesting experience, you need to know your content well – especially your key phrases, facts and stories.

Instead they should be told, “You’ve done this before, so you know what works. Just give them that.”

“Imagine them naked.”

This one has been around for eons. And it’s always been silly advice. The likely result is that you will find it distracting,,,or disturbing!

Instead the advice should be to locate two or three people in the audience (ideally seated in different areas) who seem interested. Make eye contact with these people. Ignore those with negative body language. In a room of 20 or more there will always be someone who doesn’t want to be there (unless you are a celebrity!) They are not your problem. Just focus on the ones who do want to be there.

“Everything you say must be new to them.”

This creates a mindset where a speaker feels guilt if they say something that audience members have heard before. They then apologetically introduce their content with lines like:

  • “I’m sorry if you’ve heard this before… “
  • “You may have already seen this; and, if so, I apologise.”

Instead they should be told, “It doesn’t matter if some of them may have heard of it before. Many won’t have and you’ll be using it in your own original context.” The reality is, there is no way you can know all that audience members have heard before, so setting yourself an ‘originality test’ like this is absurd.

Speakers remember: all advice is well-intentioned; but that doesn’t make it good. And if you’re trying to assist a speaker; be wise with your advice.

Scattering Ashes – Determining Where Ashes Should Be Scattered

Scattering ashes of your cremated loved one may make you feel peaceful, closing a chapter of the deceased’s life as well as your own. As you determine where ashes should be scattered, you may choose a place your loved one found very meaningful. It might be the Pacific Ocean or the top of Mount Everest. It might be the Yankee baseball stadium or your own garden. You may want to scatter the ashes at the person’s birthplace, closing the circle of his or her life.

Four members of my family having been cremated, I know the dilemma of determining where ashes should be scattered – or if they should be scattered at all. One’s ashes lie buried in the cemetery next to his wife’s plot. A second’s ashes drifted onto the ocean waters off a picturesque Canadian island. The third’s ashes glided to the ground beneath beautiful Rocky Mountain aspen trees. The last I knew, the fourth’s ashes still rest in the widow’s home.

Possibilities for scattering ashes abound, but take your time before you act. Consider the legal, religious, and personal concerns involved, even if you have the express, written request of the one who went from you. Until you make your decision, you may legally keep ashes at home indefinitely – and you may want to reserve a small amount for a memorial that is unique.

Let’s look together at some of those considerations.


As you determine where ashes should be scattered, take time to understand the laws and regulations in your area. If you live in the United States, you will find no specific national “scattering ashes law” on the federal books. However, you will find a number of rules and regulations at all levels: national, state, and local.

Scattering ashes on private property is fine if you own the property. Otherwise, you are trespassing. You might be surprised to know that sports stadiums, museums, etc. qualify as private property, not public, and fall under these regulations. You may be able to get permission to scatter ashes on private property, but be sure you get it in writing.

Most national parks in the U.S. allow you to scatter ashes of a loved one, but you must follow specific regulations. You may not simply determine, for example, that the ashes will be scattered near Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, even if that was the favorite scene of your loved one and it holds precious memories. Speak to the chief park ranger ahead of time to ask about a permit and learn which areas of the park are acceptable.

As you determine where ashes should be scattered, you may opt for a burial at sea. Be aware first, of course, of specific laws within the state bordering the chosen ocean spot. California, for example, does not permit scattering ashes closer than 500 yards from any place on their shore. In North Carolina, the scattering of cremated human remains (ashes) in Cape Lookout National Seashore attracts many mourners – so authorities regulate it well. Even scattering ashes there from an airplane must occur only after you have reached the minimum of 2000 feet altitude. Other ocean-bordering states have other specific regulations, so don’t risk breaking the law. The United States EPA states that scattering ashes in the ocean falls within legal boundaries, but you must obey scattering ashes regulations ( ).

There are many more rules and laws, but these give an idea of what you face.

Scattering ashes should not result in a citation, so as you determine where ashes should be scattered, research the areas you are considering.


Before scattering ashes, discuss religious concerns with your religious leader. Out of the thirteen-plus (13+) religious perspectives on cremation, you will want to consider the religious concerns as you determine where ashes should be scattered.

Greek Orthodox, Jewish Orthodox, and Muslim faiths forbid cremation altogether, as do some fundamentalist Protestant groups.

Roman Catholic readers will want to consider the stand of the Roman Catholic Church on this matter, which is stated in the Instruction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith regarding the burial of the deceased and the conservation of the ashes in the case of cremation, published on October 25, 2016. It reads:

“The Church continues to prefer the practice of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased. Nevertheless, cremation is not prohibited, “unless it was chosen for reasons contrary to Christian doctrine”.

Not A Question: Being, Doing, Then Having, Not, To Be Or Not To Be?

We must be what we want to be, before we really have what we want to have in life as well as do what we want to do during all that. That is how I begin this spectacle of an article, with that dramatic a realistic statement. Success is being first though, not having first, or doing before anything else. When I think about success, it all starts with a consciousness, not any physical “success” outside of ourselves. That reality explains why so many people are not seemingly successful even with the trappings of success. They expect success to be outside of themselves, not an inside job within themselves to start with.

Being is a condition that starts within the spirit and mind and branches out to doing and having. It cannot be any other way if we want the genuine success model or paradigm to work genuinely for us. Sure, I could say the “usual” if you get a lot of money, then you are successful. If you have a lot of prestige, you are successful. No, even Abraham Lincoln and Jay Gould knew that you must have the consciousness of success before the outward trappings of success. Abraham Lincoln failed at almost everything he did before he became President of the United States, Jay Gould was a great and intelligently “ruthless” businessman who did not care about how he looked in the eyes of others as long as he made intelligent and realistically prosperous decisions. These two I mentioned may seem to be opposites, but they are united by the fact that they cared more about being successful before “looking successful”. Indeed, we must be, then do, then have if we really want real success all the way through our realities.

Proper action on all levels is the key. It all starts with a patience, understanding and tolerance of what it takes to be really successful.

Success starts with a successful consciousness, everything else will be added. After all what do you think that verse in the Book or Gospel of Matthew, chapter six, verse thirty-three in the Bible really means about Jesus Christ saying seek the kingdom of heaven first, it all starts in the consciousness and all that in the Bhagavad-Gita and The Upanishads about purifying yourself before seeking success really means. Success starts with a purely successful consciousness and works its way outward. Success starts at personal reality and works its way outward.

If You Don’t Want to Be Sued, Don’t Be Rude: Maintain Good Rapport With Your Patients

Patients may perceive things very differently than we might think about health care they receive and family members also may perceive things differently than we would expect by what they observe when care is delivered to their loved ones. Therefore, we must assume the attitude of a healthcare provider is quickly filtered through the client’s lens of perception. From a client’s point of view, if things don’t go a planned, they may experience fear, feelings of disappointment, frustration, and even anger. Their anger is frequently directed at the healthcare provider in general. Little things appear large in the client’s eyes and any healthcare provider who happens to be present may be the target of the client’s fear, frustrations and possibly anger.

A nurse’s thoughts may include: “I can’t do anything about how they feel.” To a certain extent, this may be true; however, there are actions nurses can take and should keep in mind to offer reassurance their clients. I have also experienced that some clients can be extremely difficult to care for reasons that may not ever be clearly understood. Their attitude may be less than stellar but, nurses must always remember that the patient is the one who is seeking care for a health issue that may be extremely difficult for them to accept or cope with.

A diagnosis of coronary artery disease many times requires a change in lifestyle or habits. Lifestyle changes will impact individuals in a variety of ways: socially, financially, occupational impact, and self-esteem, any of which their emotions may be manifested in the form of anger and frustration toward anyone who happens to be around them. Many times, nurses become the sounding board for life’s stressors that our clients are experiencing and may be having difficulty coping with. I am certain there are many other real life situations nurses have experienced. We must reflect back to our training in therapeutic communication and revive some of the effective skills that will help client’s to cope with challenges in their life that have been exacerbated by a change in their health status.

Nurses should strive to have patience, communicate professionally, and have empathy. Remember, if the client “feels” you are rude, inconsiderate, impatient, or don’t care, your risk of being sued if significantly greater if things do not go as planned. NOW HEAR THIS: it doesn’t necessarily mean you did anything wrong. It may be all about the client’s perception!

Tips To Increase Rapport With Patients

1. Self-awareness and effective communication skills include the following:

  • Verbal communication is typically considered the spoken words.
  • Nonverbal communication includes gestures, expressions, and body language.
  • Nurses should use positive body language, such as sitting at the same eye level as the client with a relaxed posture that projects interest and attention. Leaning slightly forward will help engage the client. It is generally best to not cross your arms or legs during communication with your clients because this posture erects barriers to your interaction with them. Uncrossed arms and legs projects openness and a willingness to engage in the conversation. Make sure your verbal responses are consistent with your nonverbal messages.

2. Nurses assess and interpret all forms of patient communication.

  • Silence and Listening are a couple of the most difficult but often the most effective communication techniques to use during verbal interactions.
  • Passive listening is letting the client do the talking, but,
  • Active listening reflects on what the client is talking about.

3. Techniques that inhibit therapeutic communication include:

Advice – telling a patient what to do

Agreement – agreeing with a particular viewpoint of a client (the client may not want to change their mind if they thing it opposes what the nurse agrees to)

Challenges – disputing the client’s beliefs with arguments, logical thinking, or direct order (a nurse belittles a client).

Reassurance – telling a client that everything will be OK (this statement may not be true)

Disapproval – judging the client’s situation and behavior (nurse belittles the client).

Remember, a patient’s perception of the care they received is not necessarily what they got! Right or wrong. It starts with a perception which is “real” to the client.

Be Interactive, Not Reactive or Proactive

Run, run, run. React to this, react to that. How can you be effective when you are continuously being pulled into situations? You want a way out and you think the solution is to become proactive. But how? And what does this mean? Are you now simply pushing the same people and situations that used to be pulling you? And how can you know if you are headed in the right direction?

Being reactive implies your action begins after the fact; acting in response to a stimulus or situation, as if simply poised waiting for something to happen. I don’t think this is ever the case. I usually feel reactive when I am hit with something I did not anticipate.

The other tactic is to be proactive, which implies that your response is preceding the action. Creating a solution before being requested to have one. Anticipating what is needed and having it ready. This seems like a great position to be in; however you need to know what to be ready for. You cannot anticipate everything. The important question is how to be selective?

What does it mean to be Reactive or Proactive?

A little analysis will show something about these two tactics or styles of business effort.

Benefits: When you are reactive you know there is a situation requiring action. Unfortunately the correct action is usually needed prior to you hearing about it, so you now take corrective action – clean up the mess or stop the leaks. A proactive tactic may head off trouble or anticipate a request. Or, you may be off the mark. You may be doing something unwanted. You will only find this out after you are done – the hero if you focused on the correct situation, reacting yet again if you did not.

Learning: Not much is learned in either case. A reactive style doesn’t pay much attention to expanding knowledge, new skills or finding a better way. There is not much time to learn when you get one situation handled and another pops up. The proactive style is always looking forward; it rarely reflects or evaluates results.

Costs: A lot of effort goes into both tactics. They each take enormous amounts of energy to keep going. Neither is mindful of resources. The reactive style throws everything available at the situation and the proactive style often uses resources to plan ahead in areas that are not needed or important.

Characterizations: A Reactive style is coiled, anticipating, and defensive. The Proactive style is pushing out, busy, and alert. Both are vigilant stances.

Be Effective, be Interactive

What would be an alternative to these two styles? Being Interactive. This means you get involved and stay involved with people without there being a problem or situation. You know what is happening around you. What are your bosses’ goals? What concerns do your peers and customers have? If you have people reporting to you, what are they thinking about? And don’t be shy about your own goals and needs. Make sure other people know what you are thinking and planning. The more you know about your organization and the more people know about your goals, the more successful the organization and you will be.

An analysis of interactive tactics shows a different picture.

Benefits: You are very involved with your environment.

Learning: High levels of insight and knowledge building.

Costs: Maximization of resources; not waiting, not over planning or jumping the gun.

Characterization: Involved, asking questions, doing research, finding out how things work, what is needed, what isn’t.

Will being interactive mean that you will never be blindsided and start to feel reactive? No. However, when the unexpected happens you will have a better sense of how urgent the matter is because you will know the priorities of your business. You will know who to work with so it can be resolved with a minimum of fuss and effort. Does it also mean you never have to be proactive? Of course not, in fact a proactive style will be a natural outcome of being interactive. You will know what is needed and not have to second guess those around you – you will know that you are headed in the right direction and have support and understanding from colleagues and clients.

Will everyone respond positively to this change? No. However most will respond well as they see you are interested in them and their concerns and goals. And others will come around as you practice and model this new tactic and they begin to see the benefits.

How to change tactics

How do you make this shift? Try these suggestions and then share them with everyone.

1) Take time to debrief with all involved; especially from reactive situations. Work with these questions: What could have been done differently? Do we need a contingency plan in place for this (process, strategy, etc.)?

2) Create learning situations with clients and colleagues. Teach what you do and know. Learn what others do and what they need. Update this learning often.

3) Be creative – use the learning to the benefit of all parties. Share ideas, link ideas. Look for best practices, benchmarking, clear roles and responsibilities.

4) Look for barriers to understanding and cooperation. Then work with others to eliminate these as they arise.

5) When going into a new situation, ask of everyone: What do you want to happen? How will we measure our success? Look for understanding, past successful actions – start out right.

6) When completing a task, ask everyone: How could this be better?

Use these suggestions to reduce frustration and anxiety and introduce stability and creativity.

They say it is lonely at the top; this is nothing compared to being stuck in a reactive or clueless proactive position – not being effective when you want to do well. Being interactive gives you a tactic to work well with people. And it might be the tactic that gets you to the top, so you can find out if it is really all that lonely.
